Literature Works-in-Progress: Grattius and Augustus

At Saga Common Room (RC1-02-11)

What is the relationship between poetry and politics? In this upcoming Literature WIP talk, Professor Steven Green will tackle this question by looking at the Cynegetica, a Roman didactic poem on hunting, to examine how it reflects the Roman Empire during the Augustan age. Through extensive use of anthropomorphic language, the craft of hunting is subtly configured to promote Augustan-style leadership despite containing no direct reference to Rome.
