Poems and Manuscripts in Early China: Questions and Perspectives

14 August 2018 (Tue), 12-1:30 PM
At Elm College Private Dining Hall

In this lecture, Professor Martin Kern introduces the case of “Xi shuai” 蟋蟀, a poem from the Shijing now also available in a recently discovered bamboo manuscript from ca. 300 BCE. Comparing the manuscript version and the traditional poem raises numerous questions: about the nature, composition, and boundaries of ancient Chinese poetry, authorship and circulation, and the problems with looted manuscripts.

Professor Martin Kern is the Joanna and Greg Zeluck Professor in Asian Studies and the Chair of the Department of East Asian Studies at Princeton University.

This lecture is co-sponsored by the Chinese Studies Council and the Literature Major. Lunch will be served.
